VioletHub

A Visual Event Registration Application for NYU Students

VioletHub is a social platform where students can connect with each other and access New York University (NYU) related resources, facilities, and events. Currently, NYU has no service to help students to connect with each other, leaving people to go to other sources such as Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook groups.

In this project I worked as a Product Designer, responsible for conducting user research, competitive analysis, user flows, as well as creating wireframes and prototypes in a 6-week design sprint.

Summary

Problem

NYU event attendance is low because the registration process is too tedious and complicated, deterring students from attending.

Solution

VioletHub simplifies event discovery and registration process with an interactive, real-time map, making it easier for NYU students to find and sign up for events quickly and easily.

My Contributions

Conducted interviews, case studies, and crafted user persona

Designed and created wireframes and prototypes

Held usability testing sessions

Results

From A/B Testing, we deployed an early version of VioletHub to 9 users. Comparing their engagement metrics with the old platforms, VioletHub is projected to boost NYU student engagement by 26%.

Research

Platforms NYU students currently use…

NYU Mobile

NYU Engage

Handshake

Issues

  • Users need to navigate between 3 different platforms

  • Users must have a deep understanding of preexisting platforms

  • Users are unable to explore events freely, they must have prior knowledge of them

Investigating the unmet needs of NYU students

I conducted various research activities to better understand the needs and pain points of users registering for NYU events.

Student Survey

How many students go to NYU events?

Interview & Observe

How do people use current NYU Resources?

Ethnography

What specific challenges do students face when registering?
